Episode 85: Responsible Gaming For Everyone with Daniel Prior

Daniel Prior, the cofounder and CEO of Regen talks about responsible gaming being for everyone, and the Regen App, a 401k for gamblers.

“This is RG for everyone… This is not a tool that only kicks when you’re in a more acute state. Everyone should play responsibly.” ~ Daniel Prior

Sponsor’s Message: Promoting a sustainable, entertainment-first global gaming industry.

Play’n GO is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2025. Drawing on that experience from the dawn of the iGaming industry through to today, Play’n GO designs and creates world-class slot games in the online casino space.

Play’n GO wants to see a sustainable industry that puts players first. To realize that vision, Play’n GO:

  • Creates games designed to be entertaining and fun first

  • Actively lobbies for increased regulation to keep players safe

  • Refuses to make games that feature mechanics that we believe to be predatory, such as those that allow players to pay hundreds of times their normal stake to buy into the bonus round directly (‘Bonus Buy’ games)

Now live in over 35 regulated territories around the world, including all US and Canadian iGaming jurisdictions, Play’n GO is the leading provider of entertainment to the online casino industry.

In this episode I’m joined by Daniel Prior, co-founder and CEO of Regen, a fintech app that automatically converts sports betting activity into long-term savings.

Daniel shares his journey from UK politics and policy work to launching a startup in Latin America alongside co-founder Benson Bleier, a former pro poker player.

The idea came from Daniel spotting two converging trends: the explosion of regulated sports betting post-PASPA and a growing savings crisis among younger people. The result is Regen, a fintech app that helps sports bettors and fantasy sports players build a financial safety net by automatically transferring a small, user-defined percentage of every bet, win, or loss into an FDIC-insured savings wallet.

As Daniel put it, Regen works like “Acorns for sports betting.” Users connect their checking account and link sportsbooks. They then set a simple rule, e.g., save 10% of every stake, 20% of wins, and 5% of losses. Every bet, win, or loss triggers a small, automatic transfer from the checking account into an FDIC-insured savings wallet.

It’s truly set-it-and-forget-it: no willpower required.

The conversation dives deep into why this model resonates, with Daniel and I discussing how traditional responsible gaming tools that focus on limits or self-exclusion are largely aimed at problem gamblers, while Regen is proactive and designed for everyone.

There’s a lot of talk about saving for the future, a lack of understanding of compounding interest, and the mental and physical dangers from financial stress.

You’ll also hear a personal anecdote about a player I knew back in the day who was notorious for “ratholing” chips when he won a pot.

From the operator side, Daniel explains how Regen boosts player retention, lifetime value, and ecosystem sustainability. As he noted, happy, financially secure players stay longer and play within their means.

We finished up with some ideas on how operators could leverage the app to improve the customer experience, like matching deposits up to a certain amount.
