In this episode of Straight to the Point Talking Shop Podcast, I welcomed investigative journalist and author of Vegas Concierge, Brian Joseph, to unpack his recent five-part series for Casino Reports, dubbed, “Compliance Confidential.”

Joseph, a longtime reporter based in Las Vegas, explains how his background covering tight-lipped political communities prepared him for deep gaming reporting.

The series digs into the ongoing anti-money-laundering (AML) scandal involving Las Vegas Strip casinos, with Joseph explaining the nearly year-long process that included covering every facet of the cases, from the complaints to the federal prosecutions to the Nevada Gaming Control Board actions to the culture of secrecy that surrounds the industry.

We also explored the tension at the heart of the AML issues: casinos’ dual role as compliance-focused businesses and publicly traded companies driven by growth.

We also discussed California’s tribal gaming and card-room politics (and politics in general), the persistence of black-market sports betting (driven by credit, anonymity, and convenience), industry consolidation and the “McDonaldization” of the Strip, and the rarity of investigative work in today’s media landscape.
