Following the legislative successes of sports betting, the industry’s eyes have turned toward online casino legalization. The topic has gained a lot of steam over the past couple of years, but despite all the chatter, results have been few and far between.
Two states have legalized online casino gambling since 2019: Connecticut in 2021 and Rhode Island in 2023.
30 states have legalized mobile sports betting.
7 states have legalized online casino games, 8 if you count online poker.

The disparity stands out because online casino efforts had a six-year head start on sports betting.
Online casino legalization began in earnest in 2012, following the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel’s Wire Act opinion. Three states were legal and launched by the end of 2013. Sports betting legalization didn’t begin until 2018, following the Supreme Court’s PASPA ruling.
