“Sweepstakes offer nothing in terms of end-user experience innovation. There is nothing new to it. You can win money playing the same games that already exist in the real money sphere.”

In this episode of the Talking Shop Podcast, I chat with Kim Lund, the Founder and Chief Product Officer for Aftermath Games, about some of the critical but rarely discussed aspects of the current Sweepstakes debate unfolding in the gambling industry.
Kim and I discussed the underlying mechanics of social games, sweepstakes, and other products that don’t fall into the traditional gambling bucket but have gambling components. Is the product itself innovative, or is the magic simply their ability to circumvent gambling laws?
As I posited on the podcast, sweepstakes' innovation appears to be its ability to bypass real-money gambling laws. It's in the financial part of the transaction with the customer.
Another interesting part of the discussion was the differences between traditional sweepstakes and the social casino sweepstakes model. Kim notes that there isn’t an end time or specific grand prize that anybody is shooting for. It just seems to be this perpetually running promotion that never ends until you decide you don't want to do it anymore.
How good was this discussion? I re-listened to the whole thing, and other than to check quality or edit, I’ve never listened to any of my podcasts — because I hate my recorded voice.
